The Needless Market Watch for 6/28/17
We’re starting a new column at Needless and the focus will be on what’s hot for the comic market. Every Wednesday, we will publish what we think could be hot based on advanced sales, pre-orders, artists and character/ story arc. The one thing to take away from this is we are fans first and foremost. I encourage all of you to buy comics based on the sheer fact of love for the format. Do not buy in hopes of making bank 20 days, months, or years down the road. Sure, some of these books will be hot and move on the secondary market, but try to buy for other reasons besides money. Well, I do believe that covers the why so lets jump on into it with new releases for 6/28/17! Remember we’re all fans, so take this with a grain of salt. We are not responsible if a book fails to gather traction.
I do love Ron Lim and his variant covers are getting hot. If you do a quick scan of Ebay most of his variant covers can be bought for under $30 bucks. Not all of his work has jumped, but do look at his X-Men Gold variants and All New Wolverine. This is a simple grab, folks, and it can be had cheap.
Now this variant is causing some heat. In fact it is already sold out in pre-orders on many online comic sites. This one is a 1:50 variant so manufactured rarity is already on it’s side. Plus I do love some Francesco Mattina covers. Look to pay around $60 for this book but sales have already hit over 200.
Here is another shaker from Marvel and this book is already selling for $25. This can still be pre-ordered, but I do believe the price will drop once it hits. It looks to be a 1:25 variant. The one positive thing going for the book is the story arc. If anything, pick up a copy to read and sit on it for a bit.
The Mary Jane variants can be a hit or miss but this one caught my eye. David Williams is an excellent artist and most of his variants can be bought at a very reasonable price. I love this book simple due to the homage of the first appearance of the Punisher and it’s quite nice to be frank (no pun intended). Sales are already hitting $8 bucks and that’s not bad with the book slated to come out this week.
Batgirl fans have been enjoying the Rebirth launch of this book and to be honest, it’s really good. Mix that with a variant Francis Manapul cover and you have a solid book. Most of his variants from this title are holding strong so this one is a must have. Even the Dan Mora cover is awesome so why not snag both?
Batman / Elmer Fudd Special #1 Cover A Regular Lee Weeks Cover
Do not underestimate these Loony Tunes crossover books. While they can be a tad campy, the Batman / Elmer Fudd book is causing some ripples. Advance reviews are calling this book dark, but funny. I mean Fudd is hunting Batman! What can possible go wrong? The covers are also outstanding, making them a bonus to what promises to be a good comic. This one should be really fun.
It’s hard to believe that this book came out 25 years ago. I was there for the launch and I do love some Spawn. This book has so much potential that you need to pick it up. The other covers are moving on the secondary market and I believe this one so will be no different. By the way, have you seen the thank you gift Image sent to retailers? It’s absolutely hot right now and it’s selling for $150 (give or take).
There are a ton of good books coming this week but I think these are the movers and shakers. Of course I will be checking sales on Wednesday and make adjustments as needed. If you think we missed something let us know!
Books to be on the lookout for Future Release:
Mark this one down folks. This book hits in July and it’s already heating up. Mix that with a hot artist and an X title, you will have a winner.
Here’s the solicitation:
An ancient evil is attacking the world’s most powerful minds. It will have them by the time you finish this sentence, and a moment later, it will have us all. A band of X-Men discovers the truth behind the threat, but there is no time left.
Psylocke, Old Man Logan, Bishop, Archangel, Fantomex, Rogue and Gambit will attempt to save a world that hates and fears them. Why? BECAUSE THEY ARE THE X-MEN.
From blockbuster writer Charles Soule and joined by a roster of superstar artists beginning with Jim Cheung. Astonishing X-Men. It’s the X-book you need.
And finally here is a back issue that you should not ignore.
This bat book is hot and the reason why is Harley Quinn. This is the first time that Harley Quinn is featured in an ongoing comic book title, part of the mainstream continuity. It’s a mover indeed. Sales are hitting $40 plus on the secondary market, so grab her while you can.
