Comic Christmas Shopping Suggestions: Day Eleven
Between now and Christmas, every day we’ll highlight a suggestion for gift giving. All of these suggestions will be comics-themed, and every day will see one featured.
For Day Eleven, I’m going to a comic that everybody should have heard of, but some people still haven’t just due to its popularity making issues hard to find.
Story By: Brian K. Vaughan
Art By: Fiona Staples
SOLICITATION:
At long last, a deluxe hardcover of the Eisner and Hugo Award-winning SAGA is finally here!
Collecting the first 18 issues of the smash-hit series, this massive edition features a striking new cover, as well as special extras, including never-before-seen sketches, script pages, and a roundtable discussion with the creators about how SAGA is really made. Altogether, this hardcover contains over 500 pages for less than fifty bucks!
Written by Eisner Award-winning “Best Writer” BRIAN K. VAUGHAN (Y: The Last Man, The Private Eye) and drawn by Harvey Award-winning “Best Artist” Fiona Staples (Mystery Society, North 40), SAGA is the story of Hazel, a child born to star-crossed parents from opposite sides of a never-ending galactic war. Now, Hazel’s fugitive family must risk everything to find a peaceful future in a harsh universe that values destruction over creation. Fantasy and science fiction are wed like never before in a sexy, subversive drama for adults that Entertainment Weekly called, “The kind of comic you get when truly talented superstar creators are given the freedom to produce their dream book.”
RECOMMENDATION:
The first 18 issues in hardcover format for fifty bucks. The Trade Paperbacks alone will cost $45.00, so it’s not an outrageous price, especially if you were to try and buy the back issues. At the end of the article I’ve given you the ISBN so you can go hunt for bargains, but I suggest checking with your local comic shop first, especially if you’re on their subscriber list, just to see if you can get a discount.
Saga is one of the best comics out there right now, blending smart science fiction with characters that are engrossing and flawed. Humor gets injected in just the right levels, without sacrificing the seriousness of the story. This is a great gift for that conics fan that hasn’t tried it yet. The best part is that if they really love it and want to read what’s next, then the next Trade Paperback comes out just a week before Christmas, so that awkward “what happens next?” can be answered with, “Go get the fourth trade!” I wouldn’t hesitate giving this to a new reader of comics to direct them to quality stories and artwork, just be certain that you remember that this book is intended for mature readers, since it has themes that are too intense for younger readers and does have some scenes of a sexual nature. Nevertheless, it is a great comic that should be selling in excess of 100,000 copies every month. Even if you don’t give the hardcover, find a trade or two to give this year and add new readers to this title, because great comics need to be shared.
