Character Review: Copycat

A look into Marvel Comics resident metamorph that could give Mystique a run for her money.

“Becuz… I used t’love him… an’ he used t’love me… so even a bad seed who turns into a rotten tree… can still have…a good leaf or two. “

What does it take to make a hired killer love you? That is the question that Vanessa Carlyle managed to answer for a time. A prostitute who saw her latent mutant ability emerge in her 20’s, the woman who become Copycat managed to snare the heart of the man who would one day become The Merc With The Mouth.

Very little is known about their relationship as it was during the time before Wade contracted cancer that led him to join the Weapon X program. What is known is that he would appear in Vanessa’s life when he wasn’t out on his “missions’. They shared a love of two people tainted by the world, two people who knew there were no angels coming to save them. It made them closer than most married couples.

Alright; out of contest this seems really bad. ... there really is no good context

Vanessa clung to her life with the man who would be Deadpool because it gave her hope, the hope that all the dirt she felt mired in would one day wash off with the love of one who loved no one. No one but her. However, it was not to be. Wade became sick and he cut his ties to her in order to save her from being burdened by a sick lover.

While Wade was gone becoming a guinea pig and sacrificial lamb for Department K’s Weapons program, Vanessa left her life as a street walker once her mutation emerged.

And kicking ass commenced

And kicking ass commenced

Gifted with the ability to copy anyone down to their very genetic code, Copycat became a mercenary for hire for the unknown arms dealer Tolliver. Her skill was undercover and infiltration work.  It was in this capacity that she came back into contact with her ex-lover Wade. She spent much of that time in the disguise of Domino but she was back in Deadpool’s life,

Wade went looking for her when her life was threatened by those seeking Tolliver’s will and went on to have a relationship with Garrison Kane; a man that Wade never got along with.

Ah the nineties. When everyone thought this look was acceptable.

The impact Wade had on her life is incalculable. It was his love for her that made her see the possibility of a life beyond prostitution. His care and affection made her realize that she was worth something. Likewise, his line of work definitely played a part in her future choices. It’s no real stretch to think about why she turned to a mercenary existence once her mutation manifested.

The real question is why? Did she turn to mercenary life because it would give her an outlet for her new powers and the chance for money? She could have turned to the X-Men for that. Is it possible that she became a mercenary in order to track down her lost love? More than possible; especially considering she wound up working for the very man that employed Wade. However, it was a double edged sword, after all that time tracking down the man she loved, the mercenary life had gotten to her and any feelings she had had for Deadpool had died. She was stained by her actions and her time in X-Force had shown her a life that she could have but never truly have.

BOOM BOOM SHABOOM!!!

BOOM BOOM
SHABOOM!!!

The tragedy of Wade and Vanessa is one of Marvel Comics greatest story’s never discussed. Two star crossed people who needed each other but fate worked against them. Wade never lost his feelings for Copycat and by the time it looked like a chance of them coming together could happen she had lost her life at the hands of Sabertooth.

But for a time two lost souls were made happy simply by being together. Wade Wilson has searched for something he threw away ever since and it’s something he may only ever find again in the arms of death herself.

Maybe one day they will see each other again.
