Gisèle Lagacé: Artist of the Week:
Gisèle Lagacé can draw Archie and the Riverdale gang just as easily as she draws NSFW webcomics. I won’t normally showcae artists who do NSFW art, strictly because it is predominantly for more mature audiences. With Gisèle Lagacé, I had to share my love of her work.
Gisèle is the regular artist on the webcomic Ménage à 3, which has its moments where it is definitely NSFW. However, she also does the completely safe for work webcomic Eerie Cuties. Her artwork has always had a very Archie-like quality, which completely makes it no surprise that she has begun doing art for Archie, and it was this art that reminded me how awesome an artist she is.
Some might have a problem with the obvious influence of Dan DeCarlo on her style. He created the iconic house style for Archie Comics, but whenever other artists have tried to emulate it, it’s appeared to be an inferior copy, as if they are trying to do something unnatural to them. Gisèle Lagacé has taken that influence and built upon it, creating something that resembles Dan DeCarlo, but has something more to it, and looks more modern. Frankly, I don’t know of any other artist that I would accept drawing Archie Meets The Ramones than Gisèle Lagacé.
She makes me want to read Archie comics more than Robert Hack, and that is meant to take nothing away from him. Just as he created the look for the Archie Horror line, Gisèle Lagacé makes the traditional Archie stories look modern yet remain timeless. I want to see her do more with Archie Comics, especially as they move to more modern storytelling. Might I suggest a new Josie and the Pussycats?
Check out her website for more, but we’ve included a gallery of some of her work.
