Dear Zenescope, Please Stop.

I have constantly been bombarded with the pandering covers from Zenescope for months now, and it seems just when I think that they can’t get more exploitive, they just continue to find a new benchmark. I've never ventured past the covers until Zenescope visited HeroesCon this year and I felt the urge to walk up to their booth, while they waited for someone to stop and show an interest and just tell them, “There’s nothing good about what you do.” However, that wouldn't have been fair, as I’d just be judging a book by its cover, literally. So I did what any fair person would do, and I read some Zenescope books.

Reviews of Old Comics: Unity #0

In the early 1990s, the speculation boom brought lots of new customers into comic shops. Some professionals in the industry though it might be a good time to create new universes to draw these new readers in, and some used purchased licenses to build those universes around. Valiant was one of those companies. Structured around purchased Silver Age Gold Key characters Solar, Man of the Atom and Magnus, Robot Fighter, Jim Shooter directed the construction of a universe complete with new characters, brought in creators like Barry Windsor-Smith and Dave Lapham, and engage readers on a level not seen in years. Valiant seemed like it might survive the eventual bursting of the speculation bubble, but alas, it was not to be.

What’s Next for the Legion of Super-Heroes?

I am a huge fan of the Legion of Super-Heroes, published by DC, almost non-stop, for over fifty years. This summer marks the end of that streak for the foreseeable future. Even when they didn't have their own regular series, the Legion would appear in back-ups in Action Comics and Superboy, before taking over the latter title and starting a publishing streak that saw the rise of artists like Mike Grell, Pat Broderick, Keith Giffen, Steve Lightle, Stuart Immonen, Oliver Coipel, Francis Manapul, among others. Sadly, in recent years, the title has been hurt by reduced sales, changes in direction and apparent mixed editorial messaging as to the purpose of a book set 1,000 years in the future.

LOVE STORIES (TO DIE FOR) AIMS STRAIGHT FOR YOUR HEART

One comic. Two stories. One shared theme: love in the face of death. A group of savage Vikings in 946 A.D. are pitted against a band of equally-savage vampires to protect a monastery from invasion in "Bloodlust: Deceiver of the Gods." Thousands of years later in the far-flung future, a man fights his way through an alien-infested space ship in an attempt to return to his wife and escape to safety in "Symptom of the Universe." Written by Dirk Manning and drawn by Rich Bonk and Owen Gieni, respectively, LOVE STORIES (TO DIE FOR) #1 is a full-color one-shot 48-page flip book published by Image Comics/Shadowline that hits stores on September 4 for $4.99.

Star Wars #8 Review!

Before I begin, I will try and stay spoiler free but I might let something slip. Consider this a spoiler warning now. What a solid issue we have this month and I tell you, this book keeps getting better and better each issue. Brian Wood and Ryan Kelly are churning out some amazing work. In fact the entire team is producing some of the finest Star Wars stories ever told in comic format. The overall pace and structure of the issue is spot on and unlike other books, the jumping around makes sense. You have 3 major plot points going on in this issue and they are: 1- Luke and Wedge are on board the Star Destroyer Devastator 2- Han is facing some old enemies 3- Leia encounters something from an old era long gone.
