Josie and the Pussycats is the fifth title in the New Riverdale series, provided you count the digital-only Kevin Keller series set a few years in the future. This series puts the girl group in matching cat-themed outfits into the more contemporary world Mark Waid has set the stage with, no pun intended. Without further ado, let's get to the review and see if the new series holds up under scrutiny.
I know you guys must get tired of me reviewing Archie comics, but they've been hitting a lot of home runs in the past year. The cornerstone of their revitalized catalog is Archie, written by legendary comics writer Mark Waid. The latest issue hit stores this week and after reading it, I had to share my thoughts.
There's probably not been an Archie comic that more people have looked forward to since its announcement than Betty and Veronica #1 by Adam Hughes. I, for one, looked forward to sharing my thoughts with you about this comic, until I got the chance to read it. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but therein lies the problem. Please, read to the end of the review.
Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina has been building to the Witch War, and it's almost arrived! The Archie Horror title has been a favorite of ours here since it first arrived last year. Despite delays, interest has apparently been kept as alive as something in a horror book could be. Now the story that has been slowly building through five issues will reach a boiling point in Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina #7.
Josie and the Pussycats are joining the New Riverdale relaunch this September. Archie Comics fans have always had a soft spot for the girl group that once was so popular, they got their own feature film. The new series will be written by Marguerite Bennett and Cameron DeOrdio. Marguerite has gotten a lot of press for her handling of female characters at Marvel and DC. The artwork will be provided by Audrey Mok, whose work you might remember from Heroine Chic or from the variant covers she's provided for some of the Archie books in the past year. It's looking very promising.
The delays in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Afterlife With Archie have been hard for fans of the Archie Horror Line to take. Fortunately, these delays are not accompanied with missed solicitations, just long breaks between the publishing of issues with most recently almost a year between issues. The long wait is over, and we see
This past couple of television seasons has seen an eruption of television shows based on comics, with CW leading the way with The Flash, Arrow, and iZombie. Word got out earlier that Supergirl would join those shows, and a renewed Legends of Tomorrow. Today it was announced that the CW would have a solid half dozen of comic-based television series on its schedule. The newest series to debut, based on a comic book series is Riverdale.
We just learned that Unbeatable Squirrel Girl writer Ryan North will take over Jughead this September with its ninth issue. Taking over as artist will be Derek Charm, whose work you might recognize from IDW's Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, and is the artist for the upcoming Jughead #7. Also of note in the ninth issue is the New Riverdale debut of a certain teenage witch, Sabrina.
Afterlife With Archie stands as the one Archie title that changed the direction the characters could go. It's quite possible that without the success of Afterlife With Archie, we would not have seen the current crop of New Riverdale titles. It has been a long time since we saw a new issue of Afterlife With Archie, and even after eight issues, questions about the events that led to the horror of this version of Riverdale remain. The status of some of the other characters that crossed the paths of Archie and the gang are also still unknown. Well buckle in, because the cover of Afterlife With Archie #10 features a certain guitar-playing Pussycat.
Threadless, which is one the most popular places to go for t-shirts that show your passion for comics, games, science and all things nerdy now has official Archie Comics t-shirts. There are seven designs from classic Archie and the gang to the New Riverdale, including a great milkshake design featuring artwork by Fiona Staples.
